Amazon has just purchased a company that makes 3D maps.
The company is called UpNext, and its maps look like this:
The maps are currently available for Android and iOS devices. Here’s a video showing how the maps work.
Why did Amazon buy the company? Well, iOS has its new Maps app coming soon and Android devices have Google Maps. Up until now, the Kindle Fire had nothing comparable of its own, no built-in maps app. This could also be a sign that Amazon is moving toward its own smartphone (as we’ve discussed here in the past) or a 3G version of the Kindle Fire.
