I just got an email from Amazon that details some changes the company is making to its Amazon Associates affiliate program.

Some of the changes are good, some are not so good. Effective July 1, 2012, Amazon will be changing the following affiliate commissions:

  • Magazine Products sold on Amazon.com will increase to a 25% fixed rate from a volume-based rate of 4 – 8.5% (Good!)
  • Grocery Products sold on Amazon.com will move to a 4% fixed rate from a volume-based rate of 4 – 8.5% (Bad!)
  • MYHABIT will move to a fixed rate of 8% from a fixed rate of 15% (Bad!)
  • Industrial Products sold on Amazon.com and all Products on AmazonSupply.com (previously known as SmallParts.com) will move to a fixed rate of 8% from a fixed rate of 15% (Bad!)
I wonder if the previous, higher rates of grocery, MYHABIT, and industrial products were to get more affiliates signed up, and I wonder if that’s what Amazon is now doing with the magazines — maybe magazine sales through Amazon have been falling and the company wants to push sales a bit more.
