The Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire have gotten firmware update love from Amazon in the past couple months, and soon there will be an update for the remaining e-reader, the Kindle (aka Kindle 4).

The update will be sent out and installed automatically over the next couple weeks, and will include the following upgrades:

  • Updated parental control options – Users will be able to restrict access to the Kindle store, the browser, and the books archive.
  • KF8 support – KF8 is Amazon’s new file format that supports more “advanced” ebook features, such as a variety of fonts, pop-up text, and more specialized formatting. This means that Kindle books like comic books that have previously only been readable on the Kindle Fire will be readable on the Kindle.
  • Enhanced text readability – Text viewed on the Kindle will be higher contrast, with the result being a more “paper-like” reading experience.

We’ll keep you posted as to when the Kindle 4 upgrade is actually sent out and to any other updated features we come across.
