Send to KindleThere have been a lot of tax-related articles here on Amazopia that relate to the fact that customers don’t have to pay sales tax on Amazon.com (and other online retailer) orders in many US states. But there could soon be a nation-wide law on the books soon enough.
There’s a great article over at Forbes entitled Widespread Amazon and Internet Taxes Coming Soon that gives a good overview of the issue, so definitely go give it a read. Also check out this Commission Junction map of the current state of internet sales tax in the various 50 states.
This would actually be a good thing for Amazon (and Amazon has been pushing for a nation-wide law for years), as the company has been dealing with states on an individual basis, and it is usually only Amazon (and not other online retailers) that end up paying the tax. A nation-wide tax would level the playing field in regard to all online retailers.
