Walmart Ditches its Version of Amazon Prime

Last year, Walmart tried to compete with Amazon’s $99/year Prime  with the $49/year “ShippingPass” program.  Although it’s a lot cheaper than Amazon’s, it didn’t even have at least half of what Prime offers.  With Prime, you’re not just getting a free two-day shipping…  You get unlimited instant access to videos, songs, e-books, audio books, unlimited photo storage and early access to lightning deals.

I guess that’s the reason why the “ShippingPass” program didn’t click.  Today, Walmart announced that there is no need to pay for a membership anymore to avail the free two-day shipping as long as you reach $35 on your purchase.

“I couldn’t be more excited. We are moving at the speed of a startup.  Two-day free shipping is the first of many moves we will be making to enhance the customer experience and accelerate growth,” said Marc Lore, president and CEO of Walmart U.S. eCommerce.

Clearly, competing with Amazon Prime is no joke.  Nice try though, Walmart.
