Amazon Officially Launches in Spain. It’s Fiesta Time! (To an Extent)

Send to Kindle

¡Arriba! I have good news for my amigos in Spain. Today the company opened up its virtual doors to Spain at Amazon.es (with .es being the domain name extension for Spain, of course). The selection isn’t quite as expansive as that of its American counterpart, however.

First off, there’s no Kindle store. The site “only” sells books, music (no MP3s), TV shows and movies (no streaming), electronics, computer stuff, video games, toys, small household appliances, and watches. So that leaves out clothes, shoes, anything digital or streaming, home and garden stuff, health and beauty stuff, jewelry, and sports equipment. Still, that’s plenty for the average Spanish chico or chica.

Amazon Prime IS part of Amazon.es, though it’s called Amazon Premium. It only costs 14.95 Euros a year and is good for 2 or 3 day shipping (as opposed to the guaranteed 2 day shipping in America). Lucky Spanish devils. Prime costs us $79 a year. Amazon Marketplace is also up and running, meaning that people and business can sell their products on Amazon.

If you visit the Amazon.es site, you’ll a message there on the front page from Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. Here’s the translation of it into English:

Dear Customer:

Amazon opened its virtual doors on July 15, 1995. That some month, we sent our first order to Spain. It was addressed to a customer from Burgos and the book was “The World in 2020: Power, Culture, and Prosperity.” Since then, we’ve continued to send millions of products to Spain through the various web presences in the Amazon family. Today we are pleased to open up the virtual doors of Amazon. It is worldwide.

Amazon always has the customer in mind, and we can help you find everything you want to buy online at very low prices, now also at Amazon.es.

Furthermore, it is a pleasure to introduce our subscription program, “Amazon Premium.” With it, the customers of Spain (the peninsula and the Balearic Islands) can enjoy free guaranteed 2 to 3 day shipping for only 14.95 euros a year.  It works like this: for 14.95 euros a year, we will send you all of your orders fast and free. This offer is applicable to 2.5 million books in Spanish and other languages, more than 130,000 DVDs, 450,000 CDs, more than 65,000 consumer electronics, and a wide variety of videogames, toys, watches, and small household appliances. And we’re not stopping there. We will continue our efforts to constantly expand the range of products and categories at Amazon.es.

At Amazon.es, you will find the usual features like personalized recommendations and customer opinions. You will also have at your fingertips hundreds of thousands of products in other languages, available for immediate shipping.

For us, Spain is a new beginning that gives us the opportunity to grow by adding products and categories. Today we are also opening the doors to our marketplace, which provides vendors and customers of Spain to sell on Amazon.es.

We hope you like our website. Thanks for shopping with us.

Thank you very much,

Jeff Bezos

Amazon Founder and CEO

Oh, and as of right now, the Magic 8 Ball is the #2 bestseller. Sweet.

  1. I JUST WENT ON TO “AMAZON.ES” FOR THE FIRST TIME,AND I TRIED TO ORDER A BOOK,”LIVING AND WORKING IN SPAIN FOR FOREIGNERS”.
AS I AM STILL UNABLE TO READ SPANISH,I JUST USED THE LIMITED KNOWLEDGE I HAVE OF THE LANGUAGE,AND PROCEEDED TO PLACE MY ORDER AS BEST I COULD BY PUTTING THE REQUIRED INFORMATION IN TO THE BOXES. NO USE-MY ORDER WAS REJECTED. I CAN ONLY THINK THAT I HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD THE ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS. I MEAN,THE LAYOUT IS BASICALLY THE SAME AS IT IS ON THE U.K. SITE.
ANYWAY,I SHALL NOW GO ON TO THE U.K. SITE,AND ATTEMPT TO ORDER THE SAME TITLE ON THERE. I SHALL NOT HOLD MY BREATH THOUGH. JIM DUNBAR,ZAHORA,CADIZ.
